How to Get Your Business Found Online

Updated: Jun 6

In 2020, establishing a solid online presence is critical to your success as a business. The internet is one massive shopping centre. Those with online presence are next to the front door. And those without, are lost at the back hidden away from everyone's view.

How do you get your business found online? Create a blog, consistently publish high-quality and useful content, make sure the content is optimized for SEO, make your website mobile-friendly, attract backlinks naturally, create infographics and "listicles".

Whether you're selling a product, digital service or operating out of a brick and mortar store, you need to be active online so people can find you and your product.

To compete in today's ultra-competitive online market, you have to establish yourself online.

Building and maintaining a strong online presence will keep customers consistently arriving on your site.

There are several ways to help drive people to your site. Some are incredibly effective, others are useless and not worth your time. It can be challenging to understand which method is best for you and your business.

Here are the most effective ways to grow your following. They might not be the quickest methods, but they yield the best results time and time again.

Start a Blog

The internet is saturated with bloggers, so why on earth should you add another blog to the mix? Why does your business need a blog anyway?

Companies with blogs produce an average of 67% more leads monthly than companies that don't blog. (DemandMetric)

80% of internet users interact with both social media sites and blogs. (DemandMetric)

Blogs can result in a 434% increase in indexed pages and a 97% increase in indexed links. (DemandMetric)

Businesses that blog get 55% more website visitors than businesses that don't. (HubSpot)

70% of people would rather learn about a company through articles rather than advertisements. (DemandMetric)

The facts don't lie. Blogs are incredibly useful for gaining new customers.

If you're looking to make a real impact and establish your business online, a blog is the best answer. A blog keeps your site active. It keeps Google seeing you, and it helps you to build your credibility as a company.

Your website can't afford to be static anymore. It needs to be consistently creating great content that visitors find valuable.

Blogging as a business can have some tremendous benefits for you and your company. Here is a more in-depth look at those benefits.

Quality Content Will Boost Your SEO

Google algorithms are smarter than ever. They're no longer tricked by "black hat" SEO. Google wants high-quality and authentic content. This means your business needs to put some real work into creating great content that Google deems valuable.

Gone are the days of cramming keywords into the content so you can rank well. Google is looking for the best answer from the most reliable sources for its customers. And, Google will penalize any website trying to trick it.

Create high-quality and authentic content consistently, and Google will reward you. Not only will visitors to your site appreciate your content, but they will also help rank you by staying on your page and reading what you have to say.

Creating a content plan with some primary keywords you want to rank for is a good start. Posting 2-4 long-form blog posts (1200-2500 words) each month is what is needed. The content needs to be relevant and useful to those who land on it.

Build Traffic

You probably already have a website. Maybe you spent a small fortune on it, and it looks incredible. But, nobody is actually showing up to see what you have done. It's a complete waste of time and money if nobody actually visits your website.

Blog posts are an effective way to drive people to your website. When you create great content, Google will rank it, people will read it, they'll share it, and before you know it, a 1000 people are reading it and sharing it also. This is how you use a blog to drive traffic to your site.

Not only do people start to read your blog posts, but they may even link to the blog post on their own website or blog. This boosts your website traffic further and helps Google recognize your site as credible. Your ranking improves also.

Up Your Credibility

Let's say you sell vegan shoes. Who cares? What will make anyone buy your vegan shoes and not your competitors? What makes you an authority in the vegan clothing industry?

A blog gives you a platform to demonstrate your knowledge and passion for the industry you work in and the products you sell. A blog is a chance to show off your expertise and build your credibility as a company.

There are plenty of companies out there selling vegan shoes. You have to tell the world what makes your company and your vegan shoes so unique. Blogs that are consistently producing excellent writing is a sign of how passionate and knowledgeable you are as a business.

This builds trust and credibility. People want to buy from experts and those who are passionate about what they do.

SEO Practices: Optimize Your Content

Google has created algorithms which help them to provide their customers with only the very best and most relevant content. To appease the Google gods and get ranked, you must make your content optimized for SEO.

Google has "bots" or "spiders" that are continually crawling the entire internet for new and relevant content. For example, if a user searches for "the best vegan shoes", Google will do it's best to find the exact answer.

If I Google that exact phrase right now, I am presented with a top result from the website and Google clearly lists out the best vegan shoes that were mentioned in the article.

How did it do that? Using its complex algorithms, Google found this web page based on its criteria. This usually includes keywords, bounce rate, meta description, links, and more. This isn't just a coincidence, the website author has made their article SEO-friendly so that Google will rank them.

The result? The user gets their answer quickly in the form of a high-quality blog post or article, Google did a good job, and the website owner gets more traffic as a reward. A win-win for all parties involved.

Your business needs Google to choose your company. The more SEO-friendly you make your content, the better you will rank and the more website traffic and sales you will get.

So, how do you optimize your content for SEO?

Keywords are critical. It's not about cramming as many as possible into one blog post, it's about using them effectively.

You will want to agree on 1-2 longtail keywords that are related to the intent of your possible readers. For example, "the best vegan shoes in the UK" if your content is about discussing the best vegan shoes in the UK currently for sale.

You then want to add another 1-2 short keywords also related to your content. The positioning of these keywords is also essential. You should include them in your title tag, headers & body, URL, and meta description for the best results.

Make Your Website Mobile-Friendly

Using a desktop computer for browsing is gradually becoming a thing of the past. Users prefer to use the internet via their mobile or tablets.

Making your website mobile-friendly is essential. When your website appears in a Google search, it's most likely on a mobile device. What's more, Google displays mobile-friendly results first!

This means you will have more opportunity of driving traffic to your website via a mobile user. If your website doesn't work correctly or looks naff on a mobile, you will instantly lose that opportunity.

Responsive design for your website will resolve this problem. You can try to do this yourself or hire a freelancer to do it for you. This will allow your beautiful website to work across all formats, including mobile.

Optimize Your Meta Description

This is the small description you see sat underneath each link on Google's results page. The aim is to give users some additional text so they can understand what the link will be about. This is your opportunity to persuade people to click your link.

Not many users actually read the meta description, if you rank in the top three results, they will probably just click through to your site anyway.

So, why have a meta description? Because if you optimize it by keeping it between 275-300 characters and include one if your longtail keywords, you will rank higher.

When the Google results pop up for the user, your longtail keyword will be bolded, which will make users more likely to click your link.

Attract Backlinks Naturally

Backlinks are an effective way to build credibility and boost website traffic. SEO gurus, Moz, found in the recent study that there was a clear link between the number of backlinks and increased website traffic.

What is a backlink? Simple, it's when one website links to another site. The more links you get from authoritative websites, the more credibility you develop.

99.2% of all the top Google results feature at least one backlink within their page content.

A successful backlink is determined by the quality of the link. A quality link will be organic and credible. So, if you receive a backlink from an authoritative website like The Guardian or the Huffington Post, your content will perform well with Google.

Each backlink is a little flag of confidence being raised with the Google algorithm. A quality backlink basically says to Google "this is good content".

But watch out, Google will penalize your web page if it believes you are using unnatural backlinks to chest the algorithm and rank higher. An unnatural backlink is intended to manipulate the Google Page Rank system, or it is considered to be part of a link scheme.

Here's how you attract natural backlinks that Google does like.

Create Information-Rich Content

Your content is not about you, it's about potential readers and customers. The content you create should be helpful to them. If it's useful, people will share it. The more it is shared, the more likely authoritative sites will see it and link to it from their own website.

Don't create mediocre content. Poor quality content that does not answer what the reader was looking for will lead to a higher bounce rate. This is when a user quickly exits a web page because they didn't find it useful. Google recognizes this, and it tells them that your content is weak and not worthy of being ranked.

Always create high-quality and valuable content that people will find useful and that they will want to share.

Create Awesome Infographics and "Listicles"

You will have seen infographics already. Infographics are those long vertical images that are filled with useful info, icons, and graphics to help simply explain complex ideas.

People love infographics because they are straight to the point and easy to digest and share. Social media sites like Pinterest are a great place for infographics where they can be seen thousands and millions of times by Pinterest users.

Listicles are also highly effective. Listicles are articles or blog posts that answer important or complex questions quickly. You probably already read listicles all the time. They usually have titles like "The Top 10 Vegan Multivitamins" or "10 Reasons Why Your Business Needs a Blog".

Some Research has shown that infographics and listicles have the highest engagement on social media. Because people can digest them quickly and they are easy to share. Not everyone has the time or patience to read incredibly long and complicated articles.

The more your infographics and listicles are shared, the more opportunities you have to be recognized by authority websites and influencers. These authoritative sites will then backlink to your post on their own websites. This is a highly effective way to create natural backlinks for your website.

Creating natural backlinks is not easy, but nothing worth doing in the world of SEO is. Everything needs to be high-quality, relevant and useful to succeed.

The Bottom Line - Your Business Needs a Blog

Getting your business found online isn't easy. You need to consistently create high-quality content that engages your readers and makes them want to share it. This is no easy feat and requires content planning, hard work, knowledge of SEO and a lot of patience.
